Who better to kick off my first article than the hottest diva in the land? The WWF's Lil' Red Machine has already begun to make a huge name for herself among wrestling fans, both male and female alike. And while putting her with Esse Rios was a completely uninteresting move, pairing her with the Hardy Boyz seems like a match made in heaven. After all, who could be better to pair with the most talented tag-team that the WWF has ever seen then, arguably, the most talented woman that the WWF has ever seen? Consequently, she's now more over than many of the male superstars, and deservedly so.
Why is Lita so popular? It's hard to give one answer. For the guys, her beauty plays a big role. She's hot, of course! But you can't help but respect the risks she takes, and the command she shows in and out of the ring. She's performed moves and taken bumps that many of her male counterparts either wouldn't or couldn't. In addition, she also looks like someone you could just hang out with and talk to, or approach if you saw her in the street without her acting like she was doing you a favor. This is something that anyone who has ever met certain WWF superstars can attest to, there is nothing more disheartening than finding out that one of your heroes is a total dick! But Lita is a cool lady...she plays the bass guitar for god's sake! What guy isn't impressed by a girl with a guitar? It's second only to bikini girls with machine guns...
For the lady fans out there, she earns respect and admiration by not being a slut. Women aren't nearly as intimidated by her as they are by say someone like Trish Stratus, because she doesn't seem to need to flaunt her sexuality so much. I've heard many a woman bad-mouth a wrestling diva just because of the way she dresses (slutty). Not that Lita doesn't dress sexy, which we all know she does, but she doesn't rely on her body to make her noticed. There's been a lot of eye candy over the years who have just faded from memory, while a real woman like Lita, Chyna, Moolah (Yes, even Moolah), and Wendy Richter who have made a name for themselves by WRESTLING, and that's the only thing fans really remember. And even more importantly, Lita's someone that younger girls can look up to, which is very important. She earned much of what she has gotten by pure hard work. She plays in the man's game by playing exactly like the guys do, which draws an obvious comparison to the afforementioned female wrestling legends, who got what they got the same way. And after all, aren't role models so hard to come by these days?
Her story goes something like this, although this is the abridged version: After floating around the indies for some time, Amy Dumas made a name for herself in ECW with her crazy antics, and over-the-top high-flying moves. As the manager of Danny Doring and Roadkill, she paved her way to becoming one of the greatest valets of all time by showing major charisma and taking serious bumps. And as with all great ECW talent, the two major federations were soon to take notice.
She first showed up in the WWF in October of 1999 managing Papi Chulo (Later to be known as Esse Rios) using her real name, and accompanying him in dark matches and house shows. In February of 2000, he finally made it to television, and she was right by his side, now known as Lita. Although he won the WWF Light Heavyweight belt in his debut, WWF brass began to see that the duo were going nowhere, and not for lack on Lita's part. Esse simply didn't have the charisma and english-speaking skills that being in an American fed require. They were split up, and she was free to eventually join up with old friends, the Hadry Boyz. Since then, she has gotten a lot more TV exposure, and much better angles. She is now involved in a heated rivalry with Trish Stratus of T & A involving a number of leather straps and top-rope moonsaults. And perhaps even more importantly, she is mixed up in an on-again, off-again feud with none other than Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley herself. And don't be too surprised if you see Lita take the Women's strap off of her in the not-too-distant future, as very few women, if any, could be considered more deserving of it. The rumored Three-Way for the women's title at Summerslam just might be her oppertunity to do so, but only time will tell. Either way, they can't keep it away from her for long. Who else has earned it more?
